Squadron

A while ago, I wrote about losing a lot of my paintings when the Riley Arts Gallery in Manhattan Beach was completely destroyed in a fire. It was hard to lose so much work, and for a while I've been spinning my wheels, staring at blank canvases, starting a few paintings only to scrape them off or leave them half finished to paint over with white and start a different painting later. But I'm happy with this painting. It's about finished, and is 54x54". "Squadron" is its title, and before I sell it I think I'll hang it up in the house and look at it for a while.

This is my first post here. I remember the first time seeing your paintings online a long while back. Sorry to hear about them being lost. I thought they were fantastic. As an avid creative writer, I once had a lot of stories that I'd spent hours on until a very bad hard drive failure took everything. I had even planned to publish some of them until the disaster. That was about 8 or 9 years ago, and hadn't written much since then. I didn't think there was much of a point.

Then I started thinking of all the good things I had in life: family... home... watching the sunset... knowing that there's actually something that I love to do. It doesn't matter what I write, just that I love to do it, and the inspiration comes after. Every mountain, every tree, every blade of green grass, every cloud...

I like your "child's eye view" motif... Especially since its a view from my generation. I also like that you leave the context to the viewer - a sky full of planes rather than depicting a surreal balsa bombing run or something. Your paintings are pleasant triggers that let me go back to my own summer days :)
